Domestic Air Conditioning Installation in Sussex and Surrey
JAC Air Conditioning Ltd plans and installs single split, multi split and ducted systems in houses, bungalows, park homes and garden rooms, with a free survey and a written price before anything is fitted.
Air Conditioning Fitted Properly, From Survey to Handover
JAC Air Conditioning Ltd is a family run company, established in 2010, installing air conditioning in homes across Sussex and Surrey from our office in Horsham, West Sussex. We also work across Lincolnshire from our base at Fosdyke, near Boston. Our engineers, Jay and Oscar, carry out the survey, write the quotation and do the installation themselves, so the person who measured your room is the person who fits the unit.
We install single split, multi split and ducted systems in houses, bungalows, park homes and garden rooms. Every installation starts with a survey of the room, because a unit that is too small will run flat out and never catch up, while a unit that is too large will switch on and off constantly and leave the room feeling clammy. Sizing to the room is the first job, not an afterthought. For offices, shops and bars, see our commercial air conditioning page.
As a company we hold REFCOM F-Gas certification, certificate number REF1019419, valid to 25 May 2028. F-Gas company certification is what the law requires of any company that installs, services or repairs a refrigerant circuit. We are also a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 3 Diamond Dealer and members of the Federation of Small Businesses, and our engineers are CITB and City and Guilds qualified.

Nearest Standard Unit Sizes
The sizes lit are the standard indoor units whose output covers your band. Makers usually list their wall units in these sizes.
That is more than one wall unit usually delivers, so the plan shares it between units and the sizes lit are for each unit. A room this size is often better served by a multi split or a ducted system, which the survey will look at.
This is a guide, not a design. At the survey we measure the room properly and size the unit from what we find.

How This Guide Works
- Room size. Length times width gives the floor area, and the floor area times the ceiling height gives the volume of air to cool.
- Sun. Each cubic metre counts as 40 watts in a north facing room, 45 watts facing east or west, and 50 watts facing south or with large glazing. A conservatory counts as 75 watts whichever way it faces, because the roof is glass.
- People. 100 watts is added for each person usually in the room.
- Use. 300 watts is added for a home office for the computer and screens, 600 watts for a kitchen for cooking and appliances, and 300 watts for a garden room for its lighter walls and roof.
- The result. The band runs from a tenth below the total to a tenth above it, and the sizes lit are the standard units that cover that band.
It is a rule of thumb only. Insulation, the roof, the rooms above and below, and how long the room is used all change the answer, so the survey decides the size we quote.
What Every Installation Includes
The same steps go into a single bedroom unit and a full multi split system, because a refrigerant circuit needs the same care whatever the size of the job.
Survey and Sizing
We measure the room, note the windows, the direction of the sun and how the space is used, then size the unit to suit.
A Written Quotation
A free, no obligation price with the indoor and outdoor units named on it, so you can compare like with like.
Brazed, Tested Pipework
Pipe joints are brazed and the whole circuit is pressure tested to prove it is sealed before any refrigerant is released into it.
Vacuum Before Charging
The pipework is put under deep vacuum to draw out air and moisture, which would otherwise harm the compressor and its oil.
Commissioning and Handover
We run the system in cooling and heating, check its readings and show you how to use the controls.
Warranty Registration
We register the system with the manufacturer once it is commissioned, so the warranty details are on record from the start.
Choosing the Right Type of System
The right system depends on the home more than the brand. Many rooms suit a single split, where one indoor unit high on the wall connects through a small hole to an outdoor unit outside. Where several rooms need cooling, a multi split runs two or more indoor units from a single outdoor unit, which keeps the outside of the house tidier.
Ducted systems hide the indoor unit in a ceiling void or loft and deliver air through grilles, so all you see is the grille and the controller. In a bungalow the loft often gives a straightforward route for the ductwork. We talk through the options at the survey and explain why we recommend one over another.
- Single split: one room, the simplest to fit
- Multi split: several rooms from one outdoor unit
- Ducted: hidden units with only grilles on show
Where the Indoor and Outdoor Units Go
The position of each unit decides how well the system works and how much you notice it. Indoors, we look for a wall or ceiling that lets air reach the whole room without blowing straight onto a bed or a sofa, with a sensible route for the pipework and the condensate drain. Outdoors, the unit needs free air around it, a solid base or wall bracket, and a spot where its sound will not bother you or your neighbours.
Planning rules for outdoor units are worth checking early, because councils do not all treat them the same way. A listed building, or a house in a conservation area, may need consent, so we check before we drill.

What Separates a Good Installation From a Quick One
Many problems with air conditioning can be traced back to the day it was fitted. A refrigerant circuit has to be clean, dry and completely sealed. If air or moisture is left in the pipework, or a joint weeps a little refrigerant, the system may run for a while before its performance drops, ice forms on the coil or the compressor fails.
That is why we braze joints, pressure test the circuit and pull a deep vacuum before the refrigerant is released, then check the readings while the system runs. The condensate drain is laid with a proper fall so water leaves the indoor unit rather than running down the wall. Pipe runs are insulated and neatly covered where they show, inside and out.
If you would like to compare the units we fit before the survey, the specification sheets for each manufacturer and range are on our site to view and download.
Air Conditioning That Heats as Well as Cools
The systems we install heat as well as cool, so the same unit that cools a bedroom on a summer night will warm it in winter. Inverter units ease off once the room reaches the temperature you set, rather than switching fully on and off, which keeps the room steady and quiet. They also take moisture out of the air and filter dust as they run, which helps in rooms that feel stuffy.
Garden rooms, conservatories and home offices need particular thought. They gain heat quickly through glass in summer and lose it quickly in winter, so a correctly sized wall unit can make a room usable all year round.
We fit Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, GENERAL, Samsung and LG. As a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 3 Diamond Dealer we hold the manufacturer's top dealer level, and we are happy to fit whichever of these brands suits the room and the budget. Once your system is in, regular servicing keeps it working well, and manufacturers usually require it to keep the warranty valid.

Really happy with JAC’s work. I got 3 quotes to install A/C in 2 upstairs bedrooms. JAC’s was the cheapest quote but still used Mitsubishi units. After agreeing to go ahead the works were booked in quickly. We were really happy with the installation. Everything looks neat inside and outside. We’re really happy and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend JAC - in fact we recommended them straight after the works were finished to a friend who is thinking about something similar.
Domestic Air Conditioning Installation Questions, Answered
How much does air conditioning installation cost?
It depends on the type of system, the number of rooms, the length of the pipe run and where the outdoor unit can go, so we do not quote a figure before seeing the property. After a survey, JAC Air Conditioning gives you a free, no obligation written quotation with the indoor and outdoor units named on it, so you can see what is being fitted before you decide.
Do I need planning permission for an outdoor air conditioning unit?
It depends on the property and on your council, because outdoor units are not treated the same way everywhere. A listed building, or a house in a conservation area, may need consent before an outdoor unit is fixed to the wall. We check before we drill, and we will tell you at the survey if we think you should speak to your local planning department first.
Can you install air conditioning in a bungalow?
Yes, and a bungalow often makes the job straightforward. A single split or multi split needs only a short pipe run to the outdoor unit, and the loft can give a tidy route for pipework or house the indoor unit of a ducted system, with only grilles showing in the rooms below. We look at the loft and the outside walls at the survey before we recommend a system.
Can you install air conditioning in a park home?
Yes. Park homes warm up quickly in summer and lose heat quickly in winter, so a wall mounted split that heats as well as cools suits them well. We set the outdoor unit at ground level and can fit it into the skirting so it sits neatly against the home, and we plan the pipe run and the fixings for the indoor unit at the survey. Some parks have rules about changes to the outside of a home, so it is worth checking with the park owner before the installation date.
Will air conditioning heat my home in winter as well?
Yes. The split systems we install cool in summer and heat in winter from the same indoor unit. Inverter models adjust their output to hold the room at the temperature you set, which makes them a comfortable way to heat a garden room, conservatory or home office that the main heating does not reach well.
Which brands of air conditioning do you install?
We install Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, GENERAL, Samsung and LG. JAC Air Conditioning is a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 3 Diamond Dealer, the manufacturer's top dealer level. We recommend the brand and range that suit your room, your budget and how you plan to use it, and the quotation names the exact units.
Does an air conditioning installer need to be F-Gas certified?
Yes. The law allows only a certified company to work on a refrigerant circuit, and fitting a new system counts. JAC Air Conditioning Ltd holds REFCOM F-Gas company certification, certificate number REF1019419, issued by Refcom Certification Ltd and valid to 25 May 2028. You can ask any installer for their certificate number before you book, and it is sensible to do so.
